Comments of the Head of the EU Delegation to Albania, Ambassador Ettore Sequi to the statement of Mr Ekrem Spahia (17/05/2012)
16 May 2012
I was informed on the comments of Mr Ekrem Spahia, on May 15, while I was in Brussels to take part in the Stabilisation and Association Council.
I would like to recall that my stance regarding the LGBT rights in Albania remains firm and the same as that expressed together with all EU Ambassadors in Albania in a previous statement on 27 March.
On that occasion, we strongly condemned the discriminatory rhetoric used by some politicians towards the LGBT community.
Let me stress that the European Union, to which Albania aspires to become a member, is based on the fundamental values of respect, protection and promotion of all human rightsn and on fight against every kind of discrimination.
I would also like to recall that Albania has committed in fulfilling the 12 key priorities of the Commission's Opinion and fight against discrimination is one of the most important priorities.
I would also like to express my full and determined solidarity to the Dutch Ambassador to Albania, a senior colleague, very respected for his personal and extraordinary commitment and his active role, as well as the great support of his country, to the promotion of human rights in Albania, in all of its aspects, and his admirable commitment in fighting discrimination.
Comments and the call made regarding my EU colleague are deplorable and not acceptable.
I appreciate the comments made by the Prime Minister, Mr Berisha in the press statement issued after the meeting with the Danish Minister for European Affairs, which took place today.
