European Union and African Union Human Rights Dialogue (18/11/2015)

The 11th European Union – African Union Human Rights Dialogue will take place on 24 November in Kigali, Rwanda. The dialogue contributes to the work of the Africa-EU Partnership on Democratic Governance and Human Rights. The meeting aims to strengthen the existing regular sharing of experience on issues related to human rights, democratic principles and the rule of law in Africa and Europe.

Mr. Stavros Lambrinidis, EU Special Representative for Human Rights and H.E. Dr. Aisha L. Abdullahi African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs are expected to represent the EU and the AUC respectively. Heads of AU human rights organs will also take part. The Dialogue is preceded by the EU-AU Civil Society Seminar.

Democratic Governance and Human Rights are at the heart of EU's partnership with the African continent under the Joint Africa-EU Strategy. At the 4th EU- Africa Summit in April 2014 in Brussels, the Heads of State and Government of both continents and their institutions reiterated their commitment to the principles of good governance, democracy and the rule of law. Both sides agreed on the 2014-2017 roadmap to work together to ensure full respect of human rights, international law, gender equality, and to fight impunity, all forms of discrimination, racism and xenophobia.

The 7th College-to-College meeting that took place in Brussels in April 2015 reaffirmed  EU and AU's commitment to a strong African Human Rights System that is accessible to African citizens.
