Brussels, 14 December 2016. The Head of Mission Ms. Pia Stjernvall presented today EUPOL’s end of mission report to the EU Political and Security Committee. Pia Stjernvall and Kenneth Deane, the EU Civilian Operations Commander highlighted in their presentations the progress and achievements made in partnership with the Afghan Ministry of Interior and the Afghan National Police. The Member States representatives commended the heads of mission and the mission members for a good performance in challenging circumstances. Special tribute was paid to the three personnel that had lost their lives in Kabul.
After nearly a decade of successfully supporting civilian policing in Afghanistan, the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL Afghanistan) will close down on 31 December 2016.
The Political and Security Committee ensures the political control and the strategic direction of the EU’s crisis management operations. The Committee, which is made up of the representatives of the EU Member States on an ambassadorial level, monitors the international situation and recommends policy options to the Council, the EU institution representing the governments of the Member States.
