Meeting aimed at boosting the oversight of the Afghan police

Kabul, June 2016. This week the first monthly meeting between the Inspector General (IG), Major General Abdul Zia Kohistani and the Head of the Office of the Police Ombudsman (OPO) from the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC), Mr. Naqibullah Bashari took place in Kabul.

In May 2016, EUPOL advisers facilitated a meeting between the same institutions to enhance their future cooperation. The initiative is part of EUPOL Afghanistan’s support for the Afghan authorities in the further development of an effective and accountable civilian policing services that efficiently interact with the wider justice sector with respect for human rights.

Both the IG and the OPO offices are decision makers in the area of human rights and are in charge of the oversight of police in Afghanistan as well as investigating misconduct cases relating to the Afghan National Police (ANP). The IG personally assured Mr. Bashari that his office is going to look into and fully investigate those specific human rights violation cases, which are being brought to their attention by the OPO.

EUPOL Human Rights and Gender Expert, Zsolt Szalay said: “We welcome the positive developments regarding the coordination between the two institutions and we will continue to support their work in order to enhance accountability and transparency within the ANP.”
