Kabul, April 2016. The EUPOL Head of Mission, Ms. Pia Stjernvall met the Chief Executive of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Dr. Abdullah Abdullah in his office on 4 April 2016. During this meeting, a number of issues concerning the training and education of the Afghan National Police (ANP) were raised. Ms. Stjernvall reiterated EUPOL’s support to the ANP at strategic level through EUPOL’s two components: the Ministry of Interior Reform and the ANP Training and Professionalisation.
“EUPOL will continue to support the Ministry of Interior and the ANP. The Afghan Government should ensure that the ANP perform their main duty which is protecting the people and enforcing the law.”
CEO Abdullah, while appreciating EUPOL’s support to the ANP, stated that the Afghan government is committed to reform the Afghan security forces, in particular the ANP. So far, practical steps have been taken in this regard. Moreover, he stated that supporting the Police-e Mardume (Community Police) concept is very important and the Afghan government supports the idea of building relations between the people and the community.
