Kabul, April 2016. The EUPOL Head of Mission Ms. Pia Stjernvall met the new Afghan Acting Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General Taj Mohammad Jahed in his office today, on 2 April, 2016. Ms. Stjernvall gave a brief introduction about the EUPOL mission activities during the 2016 by focusing on the Ministry of Interior (MoI) Reform as well as on the professionalisation and training of the Afghan National Police (ANP) at strategic level.
Ms. Stjernvall stated that the MoI’s strategic priorities are mostly in line with EUPOL’s mandate and EUPOL is committed to provide support to the MoI. She also stressed the importance of community policing as well as female police recruitment and providing a proper working environment for them.
During this visit, Ms. Stjernvall was accompanied by EUPOL Head of MoI Reform Component Phillip Haynes, EUPOL Head of ANP Professionalisation and Training Component John Mulcahy and EUPOL Senior Adviser National Affairs Siddique Noor.
Lieutenant General Taj Mohammad Jahed thanked the Head of Mission for the important work of the mission and made a particular point of thanking EUPOL for working on capacity building, gender and progressing female policing.
Both sides agreed to work together in terms of civilian policing in Afghanistan by focusing further on joint cooperation between EUPOL, MoI and other counterparts.
