EUPOL celebrated the Afghan New Year (Nowruz) at EUPOL HQ together with counterparts from the Afghan Ministry of Interior. Deputy Interior Minister for Administration Lieutenant General Ikramuddin Yawar, Deputy Interior Minister for Policy and Strategy Mr. Masood Ahmad Azizi, high-ranking generals and police officers as well as EUPOL international staff members participated in the event.
EUPOL Head of Mission, Ms. Pia Stjernvall said: “While we are celebrating Nowruz, the year 1395 will be a historical one in Afghanistan; this is because the ongoing peace negotiations between different countries by coming up with a roadmap for further negotiations with opposition groups would hopefully result in sustainable peace in the country. I wish everybody a happy and peaceful New Year”, stated Ms. Stjernvall.
Ms. Stjernvall offered her condolences to the families of the victims of yesterday’s attacks in Belgium’s capital Brussels and also stated: “My thoughts are with the families of those Afghan security forces who sacrificed their lives this year - for the cause of bringing peace and stability in Afghanistan.”
The New Year celebration comes from an ancient culture and tradition and this tradition has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years in Afghanistan and in many other countries of the region. At the end of today’s celebration, the guests were invited to enjoy the Afghan traditional food and Haft Mewa (seven types of dry fruits served in the fruits’ syrup in Nowruz) along with Afghan Barbeque.
