Pia Stjernvall, Head of Mission
Pia Stjernvall is from Finland and was appointed Deputy Head of Mission for EUPOL Afghanistan on 22 June 2014. From 1 January 2015, she worked as the Acting Head of Mission. The EU Council's Political and Security Committee appointed her Head of Mission on 10 February 2015.
Stjernvall transferred to the service of EUPOL from the position of Special Representative for International Dialogue on Peacebuilding and State-building (IDPS) at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. As Finland co-chairs the forum with Sierra Leone, Pia was responsible for organising IDPS conferences and representing the State of Finland along with the Minister for International Development of Finland.
From May 2012, Pia was a Coordinator for Mediation at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland and also participated in the work of the UN Group of Friends of Mediation, which promotes the use of mediation for the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution, as well as generating support for the development of mediation.
Pia has gained extensive experience in international work, particularly with regard to Afghanistan and Africa. She has, for example, worked as Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of Finland in Kabul, as Finland’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT). She has also served in the Finnish embassies in Kenya and Hungary.
She has extensive experience in conflict affected areas and was instrumental in starting Finland’s twinning cooperation with Afghanistan relating to UNSC resolution 1325.
Pia has been with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs since 1994. Before that, she worked for the Bank of Finland and in the Research Institute for the Finnish Economy. She earned her master’s degree from the University of Lapland in Finland.
Pia has an adult son.
